The use of war gaming and other emerging technologies has become standard for military training applications. Virtual and constructive simulation tools have replaced the traditional sandbox. Depending on the training goals, different approaches might be used: entity-level simulations that implement high fidelity physical models in small scale exercises for tactical training; aggregated simulations that implement macroscopic models in large scale exercises for strategic command-staff training. Until now, it has been uncommon to see the combination of these two approaches as they typically resulted in reduced performance and increased overhead.
The emergence of standards such as HLA makes possible the simultaneous use of both approaches. Such interoperability is achieved by connecting an aggregated simulation with an entity-level simulation using dynamic unit control based on the position or status of the virtual units.
Sword is a constructive simulation solution whose units can be automated by customizable adaptive behaviors&doctrines. Thousands of units can be run on a single laptop, ensuring maximum realism while requiring a low number of controllers. In this demonstration, Sword is used to oversee the battlefield with a high-level strategic view while running a brigade-level exercise. When a unit enters into a predefined “disaggregation” area on the battlefield, its control is handed over through HLA to VR-Forces. VR-Forces is a flexible entity-level simulation environment used for CGF applications or for tactical leadership training at operational level. The unit is disaggregated from Sword’s aggregated model to VR-Forces’ entity model. Once controlled by VR-Forces, the split units become part of a smaller scale theater with higher fidelity physical models and specific tactical training capabilities. The position and the status of the units are constantly displayed in Sword while the control is handed back to Sword as soon as the units leave the disaggregation area. The consistency of the terrain is ensured by TerraTools through detailed vector data providing both correlated accuracy and realism.
“As a COTS solutions provider, we always try to show to our clients how the tools we offer can be used together, quickly deployed and employed in diverse applications. MÄK’s VR-Forces, MASA’s Sword and TerraSim’s TerraTools are complementary tools that can help our customers to be more efficient. This innovative application should attract many ITEC visitors.”

“Such a dynamic multi-level simulation framework opens up an entire new spectrum of training possibilities. Specific tools for MOUT training can now be integrated into a larger scale exercise in order to enhance the overall realism of conflict simulation. Broader joint multi-level exercises (division&below) become possible thanks to the use of multiple dedicated training environments federated by a higher-level master simulation such as Sword.”

“This innovative interoperability prototype is yet another demonstration that using fully correlated terrain representations is essential for advanced M&S. TerraTools’ unique correlation by design, not translation, ensures environmental accuracy across multiple levels of detail, which is essential for simulation realism and the utility of the overall training or mission rehearsal exercise.”
