Challenges
INTELLIGENSIA is a French MoD (DGA/CAD) system developed by MASA Group for the French Joint War College (CID). It is aimed at demonstrating MASA DirectIA ability to automate legacy military simulations in order to reduce the number of staff required during computer-aided exercises (CAX), while at the same time making them more realistic.
INTELLIGENSIA decisional plug-in has to interconnect with the JTLS (Joint Theatre Level exercise Simulation), a legacy military simulation tool used to train joint task force headquarters personnel, whose development began in 1983.
Solution
Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS) is an interactive, computer-assisted simulation tool used in joint training programs, focusing on the operational level of war, as experienced by the regional combatant commanders and joint task force staffs. To relevantly stimulate task force decision makers, JTLS is forced to represent all task force subordinated units to relevantly stimulate task force decision makers, and in this respect, is a very labor-intensive system making extensive use of “push-button operators” to move lower echelon simulated units.
To fix this major drawback, the INTELLIGENSIA plug-in imparts those units with the ability to carry out an operational mission autonomously in seamless compliance with their doctrine. This plug-in relies on DirectIA, MASA’s behavior engine, to model the various missions of military simulated units. A fully customizable behavior database is used to ensure easy extensions.

Missions are modeled at battalion- and brigade-levels, adding new capabilities for the units, such as autonomy, reactivity, adaptation, communication, synchronization, etc.
The module also includes a dedicated GUI to provide the operators with greater interactivity and functionality. Interface with JTLS is implemented using OES (Operational Environment Simulation). OES is a NC3A tool allowing interfacing JTLS through a dynamic database, using SQL. It is capable of both reading unit states and sending orders. Accessing this database (running on an Oracle server) was very cost- and time-effective in comparison with developing a specific bridge with a proprietary protocol.
The INTELLIGENSIA plug-in resulted in improvement of the learning curve, while the ability to represent high-level behaviors greatly increased operators’ efficiency during exercises.
Key benefits
The INTELLIGENSIA plugin, powered by DirectIA technology, was able to:
- Enhance well-known legacy simulation JTLS, thanks to high-level behavior automation
- Reduce the number of staff required during computer-aided exercises
- Improve exercises realism: units can carry out operational missions autonomously in seamless compliance with their doctrine
